Duke

April 29th, 2008 by Derrick DePledge

Lt. Gov. James “Duke” Aiona has a new fundraising letter out that previews some of the themes Republicans may use against majority Democrats in this year’s elections.

The themes: tax relief, medical-malpractice liability reform, taking away the governor’s emergency powers, and restricting the administration’s spending of federal welfare money.

The only Democrat mentioned by name in the letter is state Rep. Tommy Waters, D-51st (Lanikai, Waimänalo), the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, who has become a target on malpractice reform.

Aiona, who is running for governor in 2010, opens with his characterization of this year’s session:

Lackluster, arrogant, hurtful. These are some of the adjectives used to describe this year’s legislative session. Let me share with you a few examples of why the Legislature has failed our State and how the Lingle-Aiona Administration is overcoming the obstacles put before us.

The letter was addressed to a Colleen W. Hanabusa of Kapolei …

  1. Name your dog duke:

Duke is a suitable name for a canine, usually a male dog in gender. Having a monosyllabic appellation is beneficial for a master’s animal; when called by his superiors, he’ll submit most docilely to his human master’s whim.

Choosing a name such as “duke” for your dog or other pet is certainly both appropriate in stature and ease to effectively communicate your orders and commands.

When duke is done consuming his table scraps, he can favor his posterior and savor with his analogous organ (tongue).

  2. charles:

Give Aiona an “A” for effort. But look at the results. The Republicans are irrelevant in the legislature with their numbers going down every year Lingle-Aiona have been in office. They will probably gain in the House this year for the simple reason that it’s nearly impossible to go to zero.

As far as Aiona’s attempt to gain traction, the logical question to ask will be, “What have you been doing the last six years?” His ICE initiative resulted in another study and no action. And his other big issue was trying to ban alcohol at Aloha Stadium.

Not the greatest record of accomplishments.

  3. Earl of Sandwich:

charles is right. “Irrelevant” is the only word you need to campaign against a sitting republican. If I were a member of the minority party in the legislature, my message to the Lingle-Aiona administration would be, “Stop helping us!”

As for Duke’s “offensive,” I guess when you have nothing to show for yourself, you just go trying to tear the other guy down.

  4. Oil Pan:

I noticed that our LG’s letter is silent on econonmic initiatives, and reverts to old, worn, tired GOP themes. I guess it’s only natural to hide what’s obvious - that GOP economic initiatives both nationally, and locally have been putrid to say the least. Mr. LG, under the Lingle-Aiona years we’ve lost ATA, ALL of Aloha Airlines, we’re going to see increased unemployment, and we’re learning how Lingle/Duke handled the Superferry fiasco, and the “H-2″ scandal. And what’s happening with the financial status of our telephone company. Will it go belly up as well? Hey, we may end up with a State with no cargo service, and no telephone company and Duke’s complaining about the loss of discretion to spend federal welfare $ for questionable purposes??? Talk about “lackluster, arrogant and hurtful”. No wonder no one was at the switch when all the crashes occured.

  5. Two-Party:

Frankly I don’t know why Duke Aiona cares so much about you. Shouldn’t he just join the political bandwagon and keep the people from having any real voice in their government? That’s why we have the lowest voter turnout rate in the nation. Duke is the one who called for a con con. He’s the one who put it on the ballot and has been pushing it forward. He’s been trying to get us involved. That’s more than I can say for Mufi. I’m glad people are organizing around a public vote for rail. If we don’t step up for what we believe, who else will? Well, except for Duke.

  6. Casablanca:

I have never been all that involved in politics but I know doctors are leaving the state and our healthcare service is suffering as a result. There was hardly a murmur when the Democrats killed medical malpractice reform. I think it’s a critical issue that’s not being addressed. And I’m glad to see the Lt. Gov. believes it’s important. It seems like every year, the Legislature, which we all know is controlled by the Democrats, just does whatever it wants without regard to what we want. We live in a beautiful place that people from around the world come to visit. It says a lot that many people who live here are priced out of the state and the Democrats don’t care.

ANYBODY BUT AIONA!@#$ _- The Lieutenant Govenor was just a good old boy on the ticket to help Lingle become govenor. Republican or not we will slip right back into the same old sad song of what hawaiian politics were about. Recently had an appointment with the man, I travelled 2500 miles to see him and a 3 month wait to address problems in the family court involving missing children and children that have been murdered. The day of that meeting he cancelled after my colleagues and I were already in the office. When we pulled out phone records to show that we had are meeting that day(because they denied ever setting up the meeting) then they poorly excused it as an error..We have over 1500 signatures from residents in Hawaii that were not given a look. How much lack of respect for the residents of Hawaii, more impotantly for the children of hawaii does the office need to show. I know election time is in 2 years and nobody wants to deal with real issues but 2 years is a long time to get the truth out there to voters.
